If the human ear can only discern 22 kHz why are Blu-ray and HD-DVD recorded in 192 kHz?

Maybe I have my information wrong, but I was told that the human ear can only hear a sampling rate of up to 22,050 Hz and that CDs are recorded at 44,100 for fidelity. Why then are the new HD formats recorded at 192 kHz?

you are confusing sampling rates and audible frequencies.Sampling rates have to be double the highest recorded frequency, anything higher ends up as aliased noise. The best reason I can think of for such a high sampling rate is perhaps reduce the need for an alias filter which cuts off all the frequencies above half the sample rate.

It's so that your pets can appreciate the massive amount of money that dumb people spend on stupid techy stuff that they think will somehow enhance their lives. Rip off! I have a normal dvd player which works just fine. Instead I spend my money on holidays and a softtop car
