i just was looking for an online version of mice and men apparently its against the copyright regulations i don't know if steinbeck is still alive but the same would apply for deceased authors

Even if the author is deceased, there are copywrite laws that may apply to his/her work. They may leave the rights to their work in a will- often to their heirs, sometimes to benefit a charity or institution (such as a university). This allows authors and/or their estates to earn something from any copies made of the material.
