If someone tries to break into my house and I beat them into a bloody pulp,

do I get in trouble with the law? I'm just wondering because my neighbor got broken into, so I was wondering if I could take matters into my own hands if that ever happens (and I'll have some fun along the way).

P.S. By bloody pulp, i don't mean any structural or any type of permanent damage.
