If someone pulls out a BB Gun and I stabbed them would I go to jail?

Even if I didn't know it was a BB Gun(Thought It was a real gun)? And I killed the person, only in self defense?
How isn't it self defense, but you can use a gun if someone pulls out a gun on you?
