If someone has been sent to a court ordered alcohol rehab program, can they

still purchase firearms? My friend has been arrested for disorderly conduct and public drunkenness twice. He was also charged with criminal mischief once, but he plea bargained it away.
The first time he was in trouble he was sentenced to 20 hours of public service and a $200 fine. The second time he was ordered into an alcohol rehab program, sentenced to 50 hours public service and a $200 fine. He does own a 22 rifle already, but since it was purchased as private sale at a gun show, no background check, no ID, just cash and carry. Nothing on record. Should he turn it in? Will he get it back? Is he prohibited from buying firearms now? Private sales too?
He tells me he's going to give up drinking and start shooting more, as it requires a steady hand, which the drinking has lessened, even when he isn't drunk. For a time I think he was drunk pretty much every day for at least a year.

The Bobber family never drinks, smokes or has sex out of wedlock. Unwed males are allowed self relief only on their birthdays. Females don't require release, thus are prohibited from attempting. We are an ethical clan.

If he is under the control of the court... or being supervised by the corrections system in your state I'd assume there is a 99.9% chance that he is barred from "possessing" firearms until he is released from supervision.


Should he turn it in? This is my opinion... don't ask dont tell... but if he gets stupid the chips will fall were they may. If it's a short term issue (like the possesion aspect) he could just let a freind keep his rifle offsite until his obligation is cleared up.

If the guy is starting to verbalize "goals" like improving a skill... thats a good thing. Keep him busy and be his freind--- just dont enable his bad choices and behavior.
