If "Slumdog Millionaire" is not an American movie, how come it won the "Best Movie" Oscar?

By "Best Foreign Oscar" I meant "Best Foreign Movie" Oscar.Shouldn't it have won the "Best FOREIGN Oscar" instead? I just saw the movie and it is indeed very good, but I am a little confused now as to what criteria the Academy uses for "Best Movie" Oscar and "Best Foreign Movie" Oscar. Can anybody please explain?If it is considered American because the producing company is American. Where can I find information to confirm that? As far as I have researched the producing company seems to be from the UK.Again, what are the Academy's criteria? Language? Monies? Nationality of distributing company? Being released in the U.S.? Being shown in U.S. theaters? How can I confirm that criteria? A link to the Academy's rules and regulations perhaps?
 
It was produced and distributed through an American company so it is technically an American Film. Just because it takes place in a different country doesn't make it a foreign film.
 
Owing to monies and distribution, it is technically an american film (I know, i was confused as well)
 
No, Best Foreign oscar does not mean the best foreign movie oscar.It means the best foreign language oscar.Any movie in english is not a foreign movie, no matter the country.If Slumdog millionaire was in Hindi, it wouldn't have been there in the best film category.Best foreign movie is the category for the films in languages other than english and not from countries other than the US.So a movie made in India in english qualifies for the best movie category.The film was not produced in the US. The cast was Indian and the crew were Indian and English. The film was produced by a UK company and had no links with the US.I have researched a bit and found out that the film which is in English, has been released in the US and has been running for at least a week in a cinema hall in the US qualifies for the best film category.Slumdog satisfies all the conditions.EDIT :http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/rules/rule02.html
 
it's an american film.it's only set in mumbai.it was directed by Danny Boyle (who's British).
 
These days movie production has become such a international process that the lines have blurred on the actual country of origin. LOTR was financed by an American company but was filmed entirely in New Zealand with a NZ director and with most of the special effects and set design and build done by NZ companies. Most of the major parts were also played by foreign nationals with some notable exceptions. In fact except for supplying the money there wasn't much that was American about it but it would rate as an american production. People in NZ probably see it as an NZ movie.
