if my phone breaks and its not my fault will verizon replace it?

i have the LG Voyager by Verizon. the yesterday i opened it up and a piece of plastic by the hinge broke off and now the hinge seems as if it will pop out at any second. i heard that since ive had the phone less then a year that verizon will replace it with no cost even though i didnt by extra warrenty on it. is this true?
