If Jesus was black, why is he always depicted as white?

If Jesus existed (and I'm not claiming he did or didn't, in case anyone gets stroppy) he would have been black, since he would have been from Bethlehem.
So, despite all of the evidence surrounding his legend, he's still shown as a white man in films/stained glass windows etc. I'm not looking for racism, I'm just curious.
