If I want jailbreak my ipod touch 2g what should I do first?

can someone tell me the steps? Mine has not been updated since I bought it, so whenever I plug in my ipod to connect to itune, it would tell me that a software version 4.2 is available for my ipod. should I download that version or should I download the version from redsn0w which is a 4.0 in order to jailbreak? also, my itune was updated to a 10.2 . My ipod touch model is MB528LL. and version is 2.2.1
