If I try to start my 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid with an uncoded key, will it harm anything?

Basically, I want to try the trick about hiding the expensive transponder key under the dash, and using the less expensive uncoded key to start the car. Will it just not start the car, or will it actually harm something?
