Um, it all depends what kind of food coloring. I would think that it would kill them, because food coloring has special chemicals that can harm your fish's' digestive system. It would go through their gills to their organs, and slow them down. It would also melt out their eyes and stomach when they drink. Fish are very delicate animals with very delicate organs. Unless if you want to be known as a fish murderer, I wouldn't try it!

Yes!!!!!! Don't try it!
We bought driftwood from Petco, and it dyed the water to a light tea color. It wasn't harmful at all, and the description said the dye was actually healthy for the fish (not sure if it was truly "healthy" for the fish or it was part of the sales pitch, but it certainly wasn't bad for them.)
The dye gave the tank kind of a creek/river look. If you like that, I'd suggest buying driftwood. But the dye is hard to get rid of once it's in the tank, if you don't like it. :o
