If I plug an optical cable from my TV to my stereo, will I lose audio on my TV?

I've been trying to get my stereo speakers to work with my TV. The TV has only headphone and optical cable outputs. When I tried using an MP3 jack to connect from the headphone output into the MP3 input on my stereo, I lost audio coming from my TV. If I use an optical cable, will the same thing happen or will my stereo and TV work together?
 
Some TVs disable the internal audio when an external audio cable is plugged in, some don't. My Sharp HDTV keeps both audios active when I use the RCA outputs. I haven't tried the optical outputs.

All I can say is "try it".
