If i have t-mobile on a unlocked iPhone, do i need to get unlimited data plan on it.?

If I had an unlocked iphone(3gs), using t-mobile, do i need to get the unlimited data plan with t-mobile for the internet to work on the iphone?
 
the internet might not work anyway :( you might have to just stick with using wifi whenever you can, buy a sim only contract which runs for 1 month and then you cnan cancel it, just to b on the safe side :) get it from tmobile with the internet on with the 1month sim
