If I have an unlocked mifi do I need an unlocked phone to use it?

I'm going to be travelling to Europe this summer and my phone isn't unlocked. I want to use cell phone data while avoiding horrendous roaming fees. If I buy an unlocked MiFi (it basically creates my own wifi hotspot) and put a prepaid SIM card in it, will my phone need to be unlocked in order to use it?

I have a Blackberry 9780 with Rogers, if that makes a difference.
