If i go river fishing how should i set up my pole and what line and pole type

should i use? My Dad and I are going river fishing soon and usually have a problem with things getting stuck on rocks underwater.
So how can i prevent this?
What type of line and pole setup should i use for river sized fish (big ones)?
How should i set up the cork and hook and weight to get the best fishing chance?
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
