if I get a smartphone from verizon, but the account holder has a regular phone, do I

become the account holder? I'm looking to upgrade to a droid eris which would call for the $29.99 data plan. I was told that would then make ME the account holder instead of my dad who has just a regular samsung slider phone with no smartphone data plan.
is there any truth to that??
