If I compress my drive to save space will it affect in some way?

My computer's Local Disk Drive (C:) is running out of space.

If I select "Compress this drive to save disk space" after I have cleaned it will it make it run different?
In the long run will if affect how the computer works and its data?
I know a bit about computers but not much about this...
