If I cancel a Verizon secondary line?

The phone on my secondary line is on it's last leg. I need to keep that number and that line is no longer in contract. I looked into just upgrading the phone and extending the contract but doing it this way will cost $100.00. If I add another line to the account the phone I want is free (you would think signing a new contract would be as important as adding a new line). Now I was thinking I would just have my business phone number ported to a land line, cancel my secondary line and add a new line. That way I can get the phone for free and get my business number on the land line I want it on. I called my land line carrier and they said they wouldn't know if they could port the number unless they tried. I don't want them to try and port the number it go through the secondary line get canceled and Verizon not let me add another line for some reason (I don't know if they have some kind of rule where you can't add a line for a certain amount of time after you canceled one). I also don't want to add another secondary line, try and port the number, it not go through and be stuck with two secondary cell phones. What would be the best way to proceed?
