If I buy a used bike privately, should I get it inspected by a mechanic before I buy it?

I plan on requesting a VID for a carfax report before I even view it, but is it excessive to get it inspected? I havent heard of anyone doing this, but once I buy it I cant exactly return it. I could use advice. This will be my first real big purchase , and I dont know much about the paperwork /to do's when buying a vehicle. Thanks
Wow, amazing number of answers in 5 minutes. This is like a record! Heh, thanks guys.

I'll be getting a 500-600 CC sportsbike. Whether its a Ninja, katana, cbr, or some of the others i've looked at, I dont know. I'll be looking at craigslist. I only have about 2.5k to spend and I'm lookin out for a deal.

yes just like if you buy a car used you should get it inspected no sense in wasting your money on something that expensive and have it break down on you and besides if there is nothing wrong with it the person selling it wont mind if you have it inspected

yes, it will cost you whatever a mechanic charges to do an inspection, but that's better than buying it on the word of the owner and then finding it needs 100's of dollars worth of work...it is not excessive at all

Thats the first thing to do -Also why i say never buy off ebay or anywhere else you cant ck it out or have it ck out before you put a dime in it
