If God doesn't exist, why did most civilizations have a form of religion?

so you're saying that because people have imagination there must be a god?
that's one of the stupidest things i've ever heard
 
Like when Christopher Colombus came over here, the mayans and them already had religion, similiar to the Egytpians.

so if God doesn't exist, why is it that most civilizations had a belief system?
 
because there was no science to answer those difficult question, like what is lighting and thunder.
So people inveted god names Zeus, and thought he is throwing around with lighting.
They had god for everything. Nature is very impressive, and hard dot understand without science, so god was a simple explanation.

Now ask yourself this ? If the one and only true god exists, why do people believe in thousands of different gods ?
 
You need to spend a little time doing some reading and educating yourself.

Man, when they did not understand something would look to something which was powerful, the sun, the moon, volcanoes, the sea etc etc and invent gods to go with them.

Thankfully we are growing out of these things now and people are realising that it is not a fictional god who is in charge of our destiny but mankind themselves.
 
It was the best explanation for life's mysteries that people could come up with. As our understanding of the universe improves, we find few and fewer places where we need to appeal to a supernatural explanation for events.

Allow me to turn the question around:
If God does exist, why do most civilizations have different, frequently conflicting forms of religion?
