When we look into the sky, we're looking into the past. There are galaxies that are millions of lightyears away...we're viewing them how they looked millions of years ago. It takes time for all of that to form. I'm not a scientist so I can't accurately describe how they determine the ages of stars. But our planet is definitely not the oldest thing in the universe!
