If General Motors ( GM ) goes bankrupt, will it have much of an effect ?

I asked this same question to a friend and he said that a bunch of GM suppliers have been bankrupt for years but they still build parts and they are operating as they have always done and nobody has lost a job, so I was just wondering, if GM goes bust, does it really change anything?

My feeling is that GM will file for bankruptcy and a few months later there will be no jobs lost, no big mess, just the same everyday work of cars being built as they always have been.

So what do you think?
Would an actual bankruptcy filing change anything?
