If denim is so strong and durable why is it always tattered and ripped?

I am not speaking of jeans that come "pre-distressed" with wear marks, tears, and holes. What I am asking is why jeans always seem to be teared or ripped. The openings to the legs that drag on the floor for example, or at the knees are usually tattered, while other types of casual pants are not usually seen this way. Does this mean denim is not as strong and durable as people say?
