If a payroll officer is away sick will I still be paid?

I have just started working for a small business, the payroll officer was away sick today when people usually would be paid.

Does anyone know if payroll happens automatically or weather she would have to do something to process it. I know it could vary, but what is the norm? She is the only one who handles the pay stuff.
