I'd like to discuss a highly controversial issue...?

Cannabis sativa.

1) What's so dangerous about it that it has to be illegal? (Aside from mixing with alcohol and other drugs)

2) Shouldn't we the PEOPLE be able to repeal laws without punishment (even after the Constitution was meant to limit powers of the government)?

3) No recorded deaths from use have ever been reported, nor proven after study (but cigarettes and alcohol are fatal)... since it's safer, people should have the choice, yes?

Now, I don't indulge in this activity. But, I think I speak for over a million law-abiding citizens and responsible users when I say that becoming incarcerated for just POSSESSING a plant should be exactly as meaningless as being arrested for walking around with a pencil. I know all of the propoganda myths and lies, and how it started and everything... But, what are we going to DO about it?

How about a White House protest? They can't possibly arrest 80 million people at one time. That would make the US even more in debt than it is now.......
 
It's not the cannabis sativa that's dangerous, it's the munchies and drum circles that ensue after its use. :P

Very good points though. You should probably check out the documentary American Drug War that's playing on showtime this month.

A lot of the efforts against marijuana come from the US drug lobby, which loaths the idea of people being able to grow their own medicines. Don't forget the lobbying powers of the privately-run prisons that also make lots of money by housing the overflow from state prisons.

It is a statistical fact that half of our inmate population in the US is encarcerated on drug offenses and that most illegal drug users use ONLY marijuana.
 
It all boils down to money. The Government makes a ton of cash off of the illegal drug trade. It was the CIA that brought drugs into this country to build funds many years ago.

Now, with federal seizures amounting into the hundreds of millions at times not to mention the income local governments get from possession and distribution fines, why would they ever give that up?

I don't use either but I understand your point and agree. With cigarette taxes what they are (ignoring the health issues), I don't understand why they don't legalize it and sell it strictly through government licensed distributors with a hefty tax. I'm sure that's been looked into though and it comes out to less money than they see keeping it illegal.
