Ick on Fish need help NOW!!!?

New member
Okay, I have a 46 gallon tank that has roughly 15 fish in it.. Tonight I noticed that one of my Molly's had ick on her back fin. I immediately removed her from the tank and put her in a 'hospital' tank. It has the heater set at 80 because i've read that higher temps kill ick faster. I have found two other fish that had one spot on them and put them in there as well. I treated both tanks just to be on the safe side. I didn't put as much of the treatment in the 46 gal tank because the rest of the fish seemed fine it was more of a precaution. Since the other two fishes one spot has went away should I put them back in or keep them in there for a while? Is there anything else I should do? I just did a 25 percent water change like 3 days ago... Should I do another one?

I've dealt with ick before but I had a 10 gallon back then and that was it. no hospital tank so I just did the treatments and eventually all the fish died so I just bought a new tank and new fish and new decor.

Any suggestions are helpful, Thanks.
They are really small fish. I just have a few tetras, a few guppies, the molly and a pleco.
I forgot to remove the filter media.. should I take it out still? So, do I run the filter media-less or not run it at all?

in my opinion u r doing jus fine...

yes bacteria's of ICH can not survive temp over 28 C... there life cycle speeds up at 27 C to be jus 3 dayz though

but make sure u continue ur treatment for 14 dayz tht is temp

and also make sure u never add under dosage of malachite green as it will turn bacteria resistant against it... contrary to popular belief malachite green is not an anti - biotic but a bacteria strainer...

best of luck

Ich usually starts on the gills not on the fins.....good catch here, yes remove the carbon, the filter media left in is fine. Mollies not kept in brackish or full salt are prone to ich when they are pregers and that is ALwayS SO no big deal. Treat all inhabitants if you feel they have ich, if not only treat the molly. (Personally I don't think it is ich) If you fish died and you treated for ich it wasn't the treatment.

25% weekly water chang e with water testing is the best ich preventative. Stick to it. If your tank is new, test every day since you never mentioned cycle.

So you need to take out filter media especially in hospital tank. Leave the fish in there for a week min. If not complete and total clear of ick in the hospital tank in a week try another. The temp raise is a good idea. Don't change the water till a week unless the pH gets really off. Filter Media in the big tank can be removed for a few days, so to let the cure filter through the tank. If you didn't remove the media when you dosed the tanks do them again 24 hours after the first one that you did. If in a week or more you can get the other fish back in the tank that would be good. If not wait another then put them back. Don't add any more fish to your tank, sounds rather crowded and if you do you risk another flare of that or something worse.
