I would like to start playing music by ear. Are there any exercises to help me?

I've self-taught myself piano and how to read music(I've had a teacher for awhile, but I pretty much taught myself everything). I've been only playing for a couple of years now. There's a lot of songs that I want to learn that aren't available as sheet music, however. Like Nine Inch Nails for example. Trent has never released any song books for guitar or piano, although a lot of his music could be translated to piano. :/

I can have a song stuck in my head for days but as soon as I sit down at my piano I lose the song. If I play the song over and over again while trying to figure it out, everything will start to sound blurred. While I -can- figure out right hand melodies after awhile of sitting there, I find it impossible to figure out the bass line. So I just wanted to know... are there any exercises to "train" my musical ear?

I've asked my friend who plays by ear the same question. He said that if you weren't naturally born with a perfect pitch, then it's impossible to achieve. I don't think that's true. =/ While it may not be easy and I may never be able to play by ear as well as he does, I don't think it's impossible.
