Nuts and Volts magazine is a good magazine, but from your question I am not all that certain that it will provide what you desire. There is a book, primarily it is written as a school text book, titled "Electronics Fundamentals". Barnes and Nobles, or Books a Million should have it, or can order it for you. I have one, and it will help you. The problem is, it will cost you at least $100. A less expensive alternative would be the ARRL Radio Amateurs Handbook. This book is comprehensive, and covers the basic fundamentals quite well. Since I am a Radio Amateur, or "ham" as we are called, I have a couple of these books as well. Since digital circuits are such a big part of everything, I suggest that you get the manuals for the "PICAXE", as well as the learners board that is also available. The manuals can be found on line, for free. The PICAXE is a PIC that was developed in the UK for schools. It has become very popular and well worth your time to learn.
