I would like to know the difference between different dvd,cd,bluray discs?

I've always been curious about what is the difference with the pluses and minuses?????Better Performance or just contradicting slightly different formats???????So What is the difference between cd-rom, cd-r, cd-rw, dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd-rw, dvd+rw, bluray-r, bluray-rw

Also what is the difference between dual layer, double layer, and triple layer

I understand the differences between dvds cds and bluray and hddvd and what all of the acronyms mean, but what is the difference with the pluses and dashes between all of them, thanks a lot.
