I will never root my G1 again!!

Ok I'm just venting and warning any newbie to the rooting process that DON'T DO IT IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND IT! Please! I'm begging you to stop right now! I just spent the last two days in Android hell trying to root my phone into one of those new better and cool versions where you can change the theme. Well I have tried unsuccessfully to root my phone 3 or 4 different times from this year and last. I thought after gaining so much information after each mistake and rooting and updating that I would know what I was doing. Well I don't!

First I downloaded the Cyanogen 4.-something and I did the whole camera/home button downgrading the phone to firmware 1.1. And the whole telnetd and stuff which didn't even successfully work! For some reason my phone has never been able to update from an external .zip file. It NEVER works. The Cyanogen process was the ONLY thing that ever changed the phone. Well after I got it to firmware 1.1. I thought I was good and could proceed with the next instructions. Well the rest didn't work because I was need the update.zip files and they NEVER worked. Yes I checked the properties to see if it was doubled .zip and it wasn't! They just never worked! No matter what file. Only that DREAMIMG.NBH. Well I was determined to do this and spent the next 5 hours trying to get it to work. I must have turned my phone off and did that whole alt+l, Alt+s process at least 10 times with various files! Nothing. Well I knew that I wanted the old version of my phone back and spent HOURS researching how. It turns out all of that required the update.zip file to make it happen! Talk about hell! I thought I was going to be stuck with this crappy 1.1 firmware! Well just this morning the phone asked me to update on it's own and I said yes and my phone was back. I was like thank you Jesus!! My phone was back!! I will NEVER attempt to change it again! Except the only thing is that the kernal version and build number changed. It used to say RC33. Now it says DMD64. Well either way I'm happy. My phone is back!

I came here to vent and warn anyone with the same version of the G1 I have to NOT try this dangerous process if you are not tech savvy! Even Youtube videos didn't help! No one had my phone! I had firmware 1.6 and RC33 so if you have those, don't do it!! It's hell on android universe!! And if you do, wait a few days for the phone to ask you to update!

The G1 was the hardest of all Android devices to root (except if you rooted the myTouch the day root came out, gold card anyone?). You are correct about one thing. One who is not proficient in the process should probably not root. It is best left to those who know what they are doing. That said, there is nothing stopping anyone from learning. There are some great tutorials here that explain the process in great detail. So the better advice would not be to warn people away from the process but to suggest, as I do, that they devour everything there is to know before attempting to root. The task can be daunting for those who have never done it. In particular, I always recommend that people read an FAQ so they are prepared for things that might go wrong. Like anything else, proper preparation makes things go smoothly. And any questions can be posted on these forums and there is always someone ready to answer.

whatever happened to those days when i could just walk into a tmobile location and install recovery flasher on a demo g1, flash cyanogenmod, then walk out in 15 minutes.....
rooting a g1 isnt actually isnt as hard as it seems, its the terminology and vocabulary thats the killer. but , anyways, if you do plan on rooting, plan on spending time learning and taking care of your phone. you cant just root, install a custom rom, and forget about it. you need to dedicate time for tinkering and tuning your device. otherwise, id just stay with stock.

I had a tough time rooting my n1 but I asked questions. Over and over again in these forums and the xda forums. Maybe your experiance would've been better if you would have asked for help here or on xda. I know its tough when you don't even know what the right questions to ask are. But it wasn't impossible to root the g1. Just difficult. I consider myself technologically inclined and yet I was still able to do it and honestly I felt as if this was way over my head. Don't scare others just because your issue left a bad taste in your mouth. Remember, not every mustang caught fire because of fords ignition issue. Don't quit bro. Keep trying. If it gets to the point when you need to post your phone number so someone on the forums can call you and assist over the phone, what's stopping you?

Regards,

Dedication is the key word in that statement. I always tell people that unless they are going to read up on everything Android, before and after rooting, don't bother rooting. For me, it's my hobby (OK, most of my day, LOL). I spend a lot of time on the forums learning. Anyone can learn. I have a friend who took to it like a fish to water and he didn't know the first thing about this kind of stuff when he started. With dedication, he now types terminal commands via ADB (which he set up himself!) like he was breathing. The benefits you get with root can only be realized if you put in the time. You get out of it what you put in.

yep, i agree with simms. i spent like 2 months learning about rooting and roms and stuff. that was back in november, and i'm still learning new stuff. it definitely is time-consuming, but it's definitely worth it. i can help you out if you ever want to try it again.

Oh dear god, I remember new years 2009, getting my hands on dreaming.nbh for the first time, typing "telnetd" twenty times before it actually worked, flashing jesusfreke's rom for the first time and holding my breath to see if I bricked my phone. Don't you miss the old days simms?

man rooting my g1 was scary though I was successful on my first attempt. although in those days there was only one tutorial and one method and one rom. which both made it less confusing but definitely intimidating/daunting.

I rooted the myTouch using those ridiculously lengthy instructions that required the gold card that can only be made from a 2GB Sandisk SD card. You needed to use a hex editor and that was the "easy" part. It was an eighty step process, way more complicated than the G1. The next day they came out with the one-click root. I was so pissed. Rooting that was scary because it wasn't my MT3G. I was doing it for a friend. The N1 was a pleasurable rooting process.

I agree but I had no idea! All these people on Youtube and other websites talking about their G1s and how they rooted. I wanted to do it too! And it totally f-ed me up in the process.

The XDA forums are no help! I THOUGHT I could count on them to help me. But first and foremost, paying attention to how they treated the newbies with sarcasm and anger, I was not about to embarrass myself and be subjected to that kind of humiliation. They are rude! And I asked a question anyway, and it never got answered! The XDA forums are dead. And their explanations for stuff like rooting the phone is limited. It doesn't detail what to do with a specific phone like mine. And they are dated. 2009 and 2008. I was very disappointed with them. And that forum color is no help either. It's practically the color of the sun and it blinds me to death!

Thank you but nooo thank you! I spent the exact same amount of time as you learning about my phone and the rooting process and I have learned my lesson officially after the 4th time. I'm DONE with it. It's not worth it. Perhaps when I get a new phone with a new system there's small chance I will consider rooting it. That is a VERY small chance.

those were the days when nobody knew anything about android, except 5 or 6 people. i remember trying to find any info on android during the begining, there was nothing. all we had was trial and error. WE were creating/developing the information

those were some pretty awesome times. I remember moving caches to the SD because apps2sd was nothing but a gleam in some devs eye!
