If you're in the US that's called being released on O.R. which is short for your Own Recognizance. Which basically means you're promising to appear in court on your given court date. This is usually offered for low crimes and when they have no reason to believe you will not show up to court. If say you had a bench warrant for not showing up to court and they arrested you then they would hold you until you see the judge since you've already shown you might not show.

If this is your first time getting arrested you'll probably get hit w/ a misdemeanor since it was a low amount, I believe an ything over $500 is grand larceny. In any case, you'll probably just get probation for a few years and maybe some community service.
