...and gran said "a good beating..."? never goes astray! i thought a smack for bad behaviour is ok, but a good beating?hiding? opinions?

They probably are just playing on words, joking around.
I often say to my nieces and other little kids in my family things like "Im gonna slap you silly". they know i dont mean it and im just teasing.

They are not speaking of seriously harming the child.

My parents beat me with a switch on my legs when I fell out of line. But not for small infractions.

I ended up on the straight and narrow. lol. Didn't talk back, didn't have boyfriends, finished high school, went to college, became a cop, married, had a kid..etc..lol.

I work with youth now...and I can always tell the ones who don't get beatings. There are many of them...and they are very rude and disrespectful. Spoiled brats.

I have only met a select few kids who had self discipline and their parents didn't beat them.

The old time definition of a "good beating" is different from today's politically correct definition of "beating". It means a spanking severe enough to make the recipient remember the event, but not so severe as to leave marks or do any real physical damage.

A "good beating" also was accompanied by other punishments, such as taking away privileges, extra chores, so that this person would have time to think that they were responsible for their actions and that bad behavior would be rewarded with discipline. And furthermore, that the parent had the power and the right to administer said discipline.
