copyrights. What do I do? I am currently considering writing a novel using my own original characters, but basing them in the universe of x-men. However, the original authors of the comics have all legal rights to these things. How can I contact them, and how do I go about asking them if I may use their universe? I just don't want to end up with massive fines.

If you don't sell it, they really can't fine you. If you want to sell it, then you need to get on their main website and look to contacting one of the editors. But there's no guarantee they'll get back to you.

My suggestion would be just to write out your own comic book universe.

You write fanfiction like the rest of us, and you share it for free with your fellow fans.

No, you will not get permission to write a novel in someone else's universe. The best thing that can happen is that they ignore your request. The worst is that they say no, and copyright law then demands that they follow up and make sure you don't do it. Tie-in novels are not given permission, they are explicitly commissioned.
