I've always loved history, especially Ancient Roman, Spartan, Persian, Assyrian, etc. Since I was little, I've always wanted to write books and have written a lot. I think I've developed fairly well as a writer but don't plan to get published any time soon.
However, I love to write and my dream is to write historical fiction. There's just two problems:
1) I'm not sure which to write about: Imperial Rome or Sparta
-and-
2) How should I go about my research and which time period should I choose?
For Rome, I was thinking of writing something in the Augustan era or maybe even before that. And for Sparta I'm completely torn. I was thinking of either writing about the fall of Sparta or setting the story some time during the Persian Wars. What do you think?
But most importantly, how do I find out the little things? How do I learn what they wore, ate, and did to pass time? How do I know whether a spartan baby was doused in wine or left outside for three days to prove it was strong enough to become a warrior? Did they have holidays? What sort of jobs did they have? Where did they live? What sort of villas were designated for higher and lower classes?
I'm completely lost. Any ideas?
Oh, and I'm thirteen so the research can't be anything like traveling to Rome or some foreign museum.
Thanks!
