I want to use Xbox Live but I don't know what to get/do?

I know I definitely want to get Xbox Live for the holidays, but I don't know where to get started. For one, I do not have wireless Internet in my house, just a PC. Also, i would prefer to hook up my 360 directly to the computer if possible. But, I don't know what I should buy or where to get it at. Please tell me all that i need to get started and keep it going!
