I want to try a sprint triathlon but the swimming is a real weak point. how can

I improve? I was thinking of doing a sprint triathlon next September and while I think I'd be fine with the running and biking portions of the race (I run 5 times a week and bike regularly as well) the swimming would be my major weak point. While I know how to swim my stroke is really poor so I waste lots of energy and tire easily. Any tips on how to improve it? Also where I live it would be difficult to practice open-water swimming so I'd have to resort to training in a pool. How would that affect my performance during the actual triathlon (the only triathlon in this area involves open-water swimming so I can't get around it with one involving a pool swim)?
