I want to start my own business on the side - advice please!?

Hello!
I want to start my own business, first just doing it on the side at home. I will basically do some design work - business cards and stuff. I have some other ideas too.
Do I need a business license? I could do it on ebay, but they charge too much for paypal and stuff.. so if someone could give me advice on how to get started on this - something easy and cheap, that'd be great!
 
You won't need a license but you will need to register your company name with the County/State you live in. That usually only cost about $5 or so and it ensures that no one else can use your company name. It's called filing an Assumed Name Certificate. If you don't want to go the ebay route you can think about promoting your own web site, 1and1 and godaddy are good places to start for that. If you need a form for your customer's to fill out there are a lot of free ones on line that you can use just do a search for free forms and you'll find plenty to choose from.
