I want to send baby clothes as a gift but I don't remember how to judge the sizes.?

I want to buy it bigger? so she can use it for next fall or winter. They were born in april 09.and are almost 6 months old. Also should I send clothing or maybe some other more appropriate type of gift for the Baptism? Its for a Baptism we did not attend..We sent a money gift for the baby shower and wanted to do something more personal. thanks
