I want to paint an item of furniture which is already stained and lacquered...?

Its a cabinet made for a 2 ft fish tank.

It is made out of pine and plywood, and is stained different colours from adding on bits and pieces throughout the years.

Although a lot of people think its a crime to paint over natural wood grain (I agree) the panels are made of crappy plywood, the stain is a terrible colour and painting it a solid dark colour would eliminate a lot of imperfections in the craftsmanship.

Its glued together solid which will make sanding back the lacquer in some parts almost impossible (it has a lattice design for the doors and decorative routed edges).

What would be the best way to paint it in order to get the best results? Do I sand back as much as I can, paint it and then lacquer it again or is it possible to paint straight over the lacquer?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated, i'm reconditioning it as a Christmas present as well so it needs to be done asap.

Thanks everybody.
