This should be in Backstage. I'm sure it will get moved. That said, it sort of depenRAB on what kind of music you want to play. IMO, a Jazz or P+J style bass is usually better to begin with because you will have more sounRAB to play with. Unless you know that you want something different.
For books I would recommend getting a scale book and learning that, and learning the fretboard (if you aren't already experienced on guitar that is). And pick up some tabs of any kind of music you like that doesn't look too terribly complex. The latter is for just playing around, which is for fun and building technique, and the former is the actual important stuff you need to be any good at bass. Consider lessons as well, it will keep you motivated and help you progress faster.
