I'd suggest that you start at your county deed vault and do a chain of title search. You begin by looking up the name of whoever owns your house now in what's usually called the Grantees' Index, then look up the name of who sold the property in the Grantors' Index. Then you keep on tracing back through who the various sellers were as far as you care to go--eventually you'll come to a point where the property description is of nothing more than a plot of land. This is all a matter of public record and free to anyone who has the time and patience to go through what can be a pretty tedious search.

Now, that's just the beginning. Once you've assembled the list of owners, to go the local newspaper archives and see if you can find any news articles on any of them. Your local library would possibly have microfilms of local newspapers, and old city directories can be worth their weight in gold, especially if the house was a rental property at any time. I once, for my own amusement, traced a friend of mine through his various addresses in our town to the one he where he was currently living.

The main problem is to determine if the house was always owner-occupied or not. Renters are extremely hard to trace unless you can find folks in the neighborhood who've been there for a very long time who might be willing to give you some oral history to flesh out your researches.

Good luck!
