I want to grow my own salt crystal garden, I cant find laundry bluing or

ammonia in the shops, do I need it? I want to do this in a glass vase with a porous cardboard shape that will hopefully grow crystals all over it. If I just use salt, food colouring and water will it still work? If I do need these things, where in the UK can I buy them?
 
just put a load of salt in water, and leave the cardboard standing in it, it will take a long time for the crystals to form and grow, but they will when the water evaporates through the cardboard. just make sure to top up the water.

the crystals wont be very strong though and will break when they get to a certain size.
