I want to get into making custom fighting arcade sticks, but I'm not sure where to begin. Any ideas?

What kind of basic knowledge do I need to learn how to build a custom arcade fighting stick? I have fairly basic constructing and drafting skills and can pick things up quickly. Also a tech geek. TEACH ME.
