I want to change my 2002 jeep wrangler muffler, but the bolts are hard to get to.?

There is the cross member in the way, can I just take this off and let the transfer case and transmission hang there while I remove the muffler?

No, you'll have to support where the cross member is.Use a jack & or jackstand(s).

I would advise to put a floor jack under the trans.
