i want to buy one of these bikes which one would you recomend?

the two bikes i am considering are the GT Aggressor XC 3 Mountain Bike 09 18" and the Carrera Kraken 18" Mountain Bike 09. both bikes are about the same price. i do not wish to spend any more money buying a bike. which bike is better? the gt is a 24 gear bike wheras the carrera is a 27 speed will this make a difference.which bike is faster? which bike is lighter? which bike would you say is best offroad and onroad. because i am on a budget i canot affored to buy a bike anywere else but i think staff at halfords are mupets i wouldnt want them to service the bike and so on. so were could i get the bike serviced?
 
First, the number of gears on a bike don't determine how fast you can go. The main difference between 24 and 27 gears is that you have more "steps" between the high and low gear.

Since you have the ability to actually compare each bike in person, I would do so. Be particularly aware of what we in the industry call "low hanging fruit"- the stuff that is cheapened because few people pay attention. Watch the grade of rim and hubs, of the spoke material (should be stainless steel), of the quality of the bottom bracket and crank, and the material with which the handlebar, stem, and seat post are made. To a lesser extent (and if you can determine it) I would also look at the headset and pedals. Weight at the price you mention should not be a deciding factor.

All this said, I would personally go for the GT only because I would be assured that there is a reliable company that will honor the warranty if something should go wrong.
