my ex gfs used to tell me that i only think about myself and i m kinda selfish.

If you don't know what a narcissist is how could you possibly want to be one? We're all "selfish" to some extent or other, it's called self-preservation. That's healthy and is known as psychological egoism. To be concerned with oneself, also, doesn't necessarily make a person selfish, it could be autonomy and independence just as easily.
A narcissist is someone who has constructed an exaggerated self-concept or ego or sense of self. They live in a fantasy of their own making because they are in denial of reality. This fear and frustration one faces with the external would is what leads a person to escape psychologically into an alternate-persona, some other view of themselves, such that their self-image becomes disconnected from reality. Obviously, that's unhealthy.
