Here are the requirements in order of importance:

quad band
good reception
good battery life (>5h talk time)
recurring alarm (hell, is that so hard to implement?)
not a clamshell
small size/weight
doesn't have a camera (I can live with camera if all the other requirements are met)

I just bought motorola l2 only to find that it doesn't support recurring alarm, which kind of kills me.

Please recommend good basic phone. I do not care whether it has mp3 ringtones, windows operating system, etc
 
guys, I know I'm retarded and non-trendy guy, but am I the only one here wanting basic phone?

Funny thing is that I develop software for blackberies/midp/pocketPC devices, so I guess I am just tired of seeing all these fancy clumsy overgrown phones and I don't use them myself.

When you say recurring alarm, do you mean snooze? Or do you want an alarm that will go off at the same time every day without having to reset it?

I have a Motorola V195 and it almost perfectly fits your description. It's quad-band, gets great reception, amazing battery life (8 hours of talk time, 17.5 days of standby), it does not have a camera, and the alarm has a snooze feature. I have saved an alarm that wakes me up at the same time every day without having to reset it, and it will go off every 8 minutes until I tell it I'm awake. I think this is what you're describing.

The only downside is it's a flip-phone and it's not very compact or lightweight. I don't know if that's a deal-breaker for you or not...
 
Wow! Amazing battery life on this phone. I will certainly consider it. By recurring alarm I mean alarm that will go off every weekday at the same time and spare my weekends However, same time every day of the week is still ok, as long as I don't have to set it up every night. The only problem is there are no unlocked v195s on ebay...

I have been using plain CDMA clamshells from Telus (Samsung and LG) for too long, and they look very similar to all Vxxx motorolas, I want something looking different now, but I will forget about form factor for battery life and reception.

Found v190, that is available unlocked on ebay. I beleive it's the same phone, only antenna is external (which migh help with reception).
