I'm 16, going to be 17 very soon, and I don't understand the point of the statutory rape law, in california where I live you have to be 18. Right now it's a serious crime for me to have sex with a man over 18, but in a few years it's just sex. What's going to happen to me in the next year or so that makes it okay?
Why am I not capable of consenting to sex, why am I not considered a full person yet? If I murdered someone I would never be able to use the excuse "I'm just 16, I don't know the consequences of my actions."
I know the difference between our ages is large, but he's no more at fault then I am. The law actually says that even if consent is given it's still illegal, which makes no sense to me. NO ONE is being hurt and it's not going to change me at all.
What do you think?
