I want an iphone with no phone service contract, is this possible?

seeing as the new iphone 3G S went on sale today for only $299 for 32GB I'm think of just getting the iphone instead of having to pay $299 for the 16GB ipod touch. But can I just get the iphone alone without having to sign a 2-year contract with AT&T or other. I just want the pod, not the phone.
