i took my car to the shop for the brakes when i got it back the brakes

where fine but engine heated up? when i got my car back it the brakes where working fine then later that night the engine started heating up, smoking and squirting some liquid out. but the weirdest thing was that when the smoke began to come out it smelled exactly like maple syrup, no joke 3 of my friends said the same thing. there was nothing wrong with the car besides the brakes and i take it to the shop and this happens. would u think that they made some sort of mistake when fixing the brakes and why the maple syrup smell
